Product Licensing
An organization’s licensing options for software products are affected by the following factors:
- The number of servers
- The number of client devices
- Network accessibility
Desktop Operating Systems
- General Rule: one copy per device
- In Volume Licensing, all products are full versions – special rule for Desktop Operating Systems:
- UPGRADE Version only
- Need a valid BASE LICENSE, either through:
- FPP (Full Packaged Product)
- OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers)
- GGWA (Get Genuine Windows Agreement)
Desktop Applications
- General Rule: one copy per device
- Is a full license
- Portable Use Rights: customers may install another copy of the software on a portable device, to be used exclusively by the primary user of the licensed device.
Developer Tools
- General Rule: one copy per user
- Install and use the application on numerous devices, provided that only the designated developer uses the application.
- Use the application only for:
- Designing
- Testing
- Demonstration
- Development
Servers
SERVER/CAL:
- General Rule: one server license per server
- General Rule: one CAL per user or device
PER PROCESSOR:
- General Rule: one server license per processor on the server
- CALS are not required
